EU targets teen smokers

TEEN smokers in Wales are set to get help to stub it out, after Euro-MPs voted in favour of new measures to help youngsters kick the habit. The European Parliament's Environment Committee has called for the EU to undertake to cut the numbers of young smokers in Europe in half by 2025.

Mercury falling as MEPs back ban

EUROPE today delivered a major victory for public health after Euro-MPs backed a ban on the use of mercury in thermometers and other measuring instruments. Wales Labour MEPs Glenys Kinnock and Eluned Morgan joined their colleagues to agree a ban on the sale of non-electrical instruments containing the toxic heavy metal, such as barometers, manometers and thermometers.

G8 LEADERS meeting in Germany this week must deliver on their Gleneagles promises, Euro-MP Glenys Kinnock today urged. MEPs end cruel cat and dog fur trade

THE cruel trade in cat and dog fur is set to end in Europe- after Euro-MPs today won agreement for an EU-wide ban. Wales Labour MEPs Glenys Kinnock and Eluned Morgan supported moves to end the trade, for which more than two million dogs and cats are slaughtered each year, mostly in China and other Asian countries.

EU doubles cash to tackle domestic violence

WELSH women and children who suffer domestic abuse are set to get extra help and support after the EU announced it would double spending on projects designed to tackle the problem. Euro-MP Glenys Kinnock has welcomed news that spending on the EU's Daphne III programme, designed to tackle violence against children and women, will rise by 130% to £80 million.

MEPs cut mobile bills down to size

CALLING home from the Costas will be cheaper this summer - after Wales Euro-MPs Glenys Kinnock and Eluned Morgan backed plans to slash mobile phone 'roaming' charges. The Labour MEPs today joined colleagues in Strasbourg to support the new European Consumer Tariff which will automatically cap the so-called 'roaming' charges levied by companies when you use your phone elsewhere in Europe.
